Lately

Our eldest, Annabelle, celebrated her eighth birthday with a picnic in the bush.  Along with our neighbours and one set of grandparents we shared cake and a simple fire cooked dinner.  To add a touch of spring and celebration to the occasion we created this flower table entirely from wild flowers, bits from the garden and recycled containers. 


I experiment a lot with bread but sometimes it is great to get back to the plain white sourdough loaves that started my bread journey.  Every time I bake bread, particularly in the wood oven I learn something new or take away a little bit of extra knowledge.


Our current horse situation has outgrown this little horse yard.  I have decided to put this space to use and plant it up with summer vegetables.  In particular, pumpkins which have a habit of completely overrunning my actual vegetable garden.  It is the perfect space as it has previously been fertilised by horses, it is fenced securely and there is a water supply.  It doesn't look like much now but watch this space.  


Meanwhile, back in the actual vegetable garden this Long Florence zucchini is progressing well.  


Thyme is just so delicate and pretty isn't it?


Home grown asparagus, eggs and coriander.  Simple ingredients with so much potential to be turned into something tasty.

  3. I love that table setting. Have you folded paper lace doilies to make that table surround? And the wildflowers- reminds me of my time up your way.

  5. Wow, Annabelle is 8! I remember you coming into Browzers when I worked there and you were pregnant with her. Was that REALLY 8 years ago! Happy birthday Annabelle.

  6. I LOVE the idea of horse yard veg patch!! brilliant Jane ! and can not believe Annabelle is that old.. time flies :)I wish I lived closer for a bunch a asparagus .. as usual great pics ...EWE BEAUTY

  7. I love Annabelle's birthday table. Absolutely perfect. I should do that more often, just go wandering and see what I can find to decorate the table. Probably not as many wildflowers, but I think I could get something together.
    I'm happily growing thyme for the first time at the moment. I'm thrilled that it's actually growing on my windowsill and looks happy. No easy thing Jane! :-)

  10. Looking forward to watching the progress of the new vegetable patch. Our pumpkins have gone mad this year - lots of rampant leaf growth and three enormous pumpkins. Your lush, spring growth thyme looks much prettier than my woody autumn thyme. I really must get out there and cut it back. Your asparagus coriander and eggs look wonderfully enticing - who needs fancy restaurant food when you have squeaky fresh food like that. Have a great weekend. Anne x

  11. Would you mind sharing what kind of lame you use to slice the top of your sourdough before baking? I had my chef's knife professionally sharpened, and it still snags on the dough. I ordered the lame Cook's Illustrated recommends, and it not only snags but the blade flies off. I'm sure user error is at play here, but I don't know what to do differently. Thanks in advance for any advice!

    1. Hi Gretchen, certainly! I don't think it would be user error at all, slicing/slashing is a tricky business and it has taken me years to find the right tool and it happened by accident really. I use a small pocket knife which I am sure was never intended to slash bread. The knife brand is Opinel and this particular one has an 8cm blade with a slight curve at the front/tip of the blade. It is super sharp and easy to hold and handle. I hope this helps :)

  13. Isn't it lovely being able to make food from your garden? For lunch today I went to the garden and picked some capsicum, rainbow chard, chives, parsley and zucchinis to put in an omelette (made of course with home grown eggs). It was such a good feeling and tasted delicious too!

  14. look at those big fat asparagus - wow! and i agree, thyme is so pretty; when it is in flower i often pick big bunches to have inside.

  15. Those are some fat asparagus stems. I have planted my pumpkins far away from the veggie patch so they can run wild too.
